What to wear to video conferencing

We are all getting used to virtual video conferencing these days. But what to wear to those all-important video calls? How best to set up your laptop/tablet?

What to wear to your video call?

  • Avoid patterns or stripes which may be distracting on camera. This is not time for the retro jumpers to make an appearance.
  • Avoid bright white or black as this may cause issues with your camera brightness.
  • Wear a neutral colour.
  • Dress as though you are seeing the person in real life.
  • Wear simple jewelry.
  • Watch out for the neckline… no loose necklines that you might need to keep adjusting.
  • If you wear makeup, remember that things can look flat on video… so think about blusher, mascara and brows to give definition.

Setting up the scene:

  • Set your laptop/tablet up in natural light. This avoids harsh lighting and shadows on your face.
  • Position your camera at eye-level or just above for a flattering angle.
  • Move slightly back, your face doesn’t need to fill the screen. Remember others will see your image full screen.
  • Have a clutter-free background.
